SUAS/Aerial Level I Infrared Thermography Applications Training

Course Overview

This Level I certification training class equips students with the essential knowledge and hands-on experience to apply infrared thermography and aerial drones in real-world inspections. Building on existing application knowledge, students learn proven techniques for evaluating asset condition and performance, including solar photovoltaic arrays, electrical transmission equipment, low-sloped roofs, and more.

Key Learning Outcomes
Students will gain application-specific skills in:

  • Collecting high-quality thermal images
  • Analyzing images and identifying anomalies
  • Determining problem severity
  • Operational workflows: Selecting and configuring thermal drones for data collection, planning and execution of semi-autonomous missions, image processing workflows, and production of deliverables

Technical Foundations & Practical Applications
Instruction includes essential heat transfer theory and infrared science for evaluating diverse assets. Hands-on demonstrations, experiments, and simulated inspection scenarios mirror real-world challenges. Emphasis is placed on qualitative thermography and data collection following published inspection procedures. By course end, students will be able to produce high-quality thermal images and make basic diagnoses.

Thermal Imaging Workflow
The course covers software-based thermal image processing, interpretation, and reporting. Students gain a clear understanding of the capabilities and limitations of infrared thermography tools and techniques.

SUAS Applications Focus
Students learn to capture thermal images under appropriate conditions for specific applications. Training covers topics related to producing essential deliverables after image capture and processing:

  • Geo-referenced images, orthophotos, and maps
  • Oblique image collection and 3D models
  • KML file generation in support of semi-autonomous flight using mission-planning tools for waypoints, mapping, oblique, corridor, and detailed inspections
  • Real-Time Kinematics (RTK) integration for improved positional accuracy

Training Approach
A blend of lectures, demonstrations, simulations, and lab work is supported by quizzes and reviews to reinforce understanding. The program concludes with a comprehensive review, examinations, and a final student project to demonstrate workflow competency

Certification & CEUs
This course meets the ASNT educational requirements for Level I certification as defined in ASNT SN-TC-1A. It may also qualify for Continuing Education Unit (CEU) credit. Contact Fox River Systems with your CEU requirements and agency details for assistance with credit eligibility.
